Medium format with Molly

St Valentines and we went out, under the sun to have some fun with some gorgeous gowns from Enchante Bridal & Formal Wear.

Molly is our model of the day and Natalia is the talented MUA & Hair stylist for the shoot.

I packed my Canon 5D Mark III and my Hasselblad H4D40 planning for some fashion and scenery shots at the newly opened National Arboretum Canberra.

When digital cameras came along, we have assisted in a continuous race against the pixel counts. Cameras started from a mere 2 mega pixels to now carry almost 40 mega pixel in what has been the standard for the SLR sensor size, also known as full frame, of 24 x 36 mm.

Pushing the limits of physics to increase pixel counts has some downside effects, aside from the noise and file size, we are facing the optical issue: lenses can no more resolve the resolution of the sensors.

Need less to say that the primary weakness of dSLR is dynamic range, partially due to the size of the pixel (ability to store light) and also because of the files size of 14 bits.

I wanted for the shot to see, what I already knew, the difference in term of sensor size vs the pixel counts.

Below are images form a same fram, captured with the Hasselblad H4D40 (40 mega pixels and a bigger sensor compares to the dSLR’s one).

The series of images are from screen captures of my 30″ Apple Cinema display (2560×1600 pixels). The first image shows the full image and the subsequent images are at 100% crop of various parts of the images.

The last image is the FULL SIZE images practically converted from an Hassleblad raw file into JPEG without any post.

For the tech and strobist bits:

Camera: H4D40 | Lens: HC 100mm f/2.2

Speed 1/400 f/8 ISO 100 (basic exposure, sweet sixteen, for a sunny outdoor shoot)

Because the model was back to the sun, I added some fill with a Quantum Qflash TD5-R with an inversed dome at 1/2 power (about 75 Ws)

R.E.D

As mentioned on a previous post, I set up this shoot to test drive the newly added Canon 5D Mark III in my gear bag, but when packing the day before, I couldn’t resist to pack my Hasselblad H4D40 and the new HC 120mm F/4 II Macro lens. I wanted to see every details.

Along with the Canon 5D Mark III, I packed the EF 85 f/1.2 L II and decided that the shoot will be a beauty shoot so there was really no need for zoom lens or other focal length.

At the studio, I started setting up and hanged around waiting for my first model to finish her hair and make up (thanks to Amanda and Jessica for an awesome job), I though I’d click a few frames for some BTS (Behind The Scene) archives.

Man, I had this camera for 3 days and only started shooting with it really for a … BTS. I must admit that I was a bit hesitant about the camera (it’s more of a 7D Mark II for me than a 5D Mark III) but I even like the shutter sound of it .. 😀

I personally found that there are so many options in the menu and it takes sometimes to change from one set of menu to another … Haven’t really tested the Canon 5D Mark III to its limits, I noticed through the viewfinder that he buffer size is somewhat … 10 RAW frames …

I haven’t burnt big frame rates yet but from a buffer of 21 RAW frames on a Canon 5D Mark II to a 10 RAW frames buffer on the Canon 5D Mark III is a shocker …

Behind the Scenes with the Canon 5D Mark III

It’s been a busy time and after almost a week of getting the newly released Canon 5D Mark III, I finally found sometimes to sit down and process a few images taken with this already amazing camera and post some images here.

For this shoot, I mainly used my Hasselblad H4D40 but also had the Canon 5D Mark III along for some BTS and Studio shots.

I must confess that this camera has exceeded my expectations. It is very rare that I use Av mode along with the auto ISO feature but for this quick session, it was how the camera was set up: Av mode and auto ISO.

I also used the camera for a few studio shots when the Blad got frozen and jammed my 17″ MacBook Pro… I really enjoyed shooting tethered and now travel on location shoots with my iPad3 (thanks for the SD slot on the Canon 5D Mark III that allows using my EyeFi cards) or my MacBook Air with I can connect to my camera to shoot tethered.

Check these out. Since Camera Raw 7 can not read these files, I had to convert them from Canon’s DPP into JPEG and …. that’s it. Nothing more or less than a converted JPEG from the .CR2 files. Check them out for yourself.

We shot at INJEKTD Studios and the shoot was called RED for Raw, Edgy and a bit BOLD.

The idea behind the name is I wanted to do a shoot with minimum edits (only conversion from Hasselblad .fff raw files into JPEG and … that’s the RAW side of it). The edgy side being that the shoot was planned to be a beauty shoot with really /*&#@:!$$ make up and looks and we haven’t planned any outfit before hand… The BOLD side of the shoot is …. I can’t show it here … yet :o)

Happy New Year to you and your family.

We wish you all the best for 2012.

I’ve been a bit away and was so busy being involved in several projects that I really haven’t had the time to update this space.. but new year resolution is: DO MORE.

More meaning higher end of the market rather than quantity kind of thing.

As you may know,I am investing more and more my time into editorial and fashion work and the demand is high.

I am also in the process of redesigning the Nomad Photography website (www.nomadphotography.com.au) where I will redesign the interface to separate weddings, portraits, events, fashion and editorial work.

In the mean time, to keep your patience and interest growing, here are a couple of images from a shoot I did last year, just before Xmas. I called it WTF for Wild Troubled Flowers.

WTF is a concept mixing the softness and delicatessen of weddings and the edgy and glamourous of fashion and a bit of boldness. Not that wedding is no glamour but …

I could have called it Wedding T. F but it’s not always about wedding … at least in the shoot..
